love in the real world

this morning i walked into trader joes just after an older, somewhat crotchety, woman probably in her 80’s.  her husband walked through the door after us, clearly still chat-shouting to someone outside, “yep.  she’s a miracle.  have a good day!”

his wife turned around and snipped, “who? who’s a miracle?”

her husband smiled and said, “YOU are!”

she was clearly not prepared to receive such kindness in the mood she was in and just snorted, “oh.” i’m so glad i caught the tiniest hint of a smile creep across her face as she turned it downward.
it was closely followed by a massive grin across my own.

Keep me away from the wisdom which does not cry, the philosophy which does not laugh and the greatness which does not bow before children.
