he’s just not that into you

it seems obvious to be moved by beautiful and/or artistic and/or independent films like the science of sleep, magnolia, the fall, the fountain.  but somehow, in addition to these, i always manage to be moved by the oddest of films.  the big hollywood and/or cheesy and/or obvious ones.  saved rocked me. garden state changed me. motorcycle diaries shattered me.

today he’s just not that into you made me bawl. if you haven’t seen it, you probably should. it’s entertaining for sure and actually has a good bit of wisdom somewhere between the folds. but there’s a particular scene (i don’t want to ruin anything so let’s just say it’s a dish washing scene) that was such a subtle catharsis within all the maddening and depressing chaos. i find it so interesting that amidst all of the gunk and walls and layers that the moment i caught a glimpse of what love might actually look like i literally broke into sobs. it’s funny (and embarassing) how hollywood can do that.

Keep me away from the wisdom which does not cry, the philosophy which does not laugh and the greatness which does not bow before children.
