a furry welcome (in more ways than one)

i woke up this morning with a smallish (only 4 or 5 inches wide) tarantula on the floor.  welcome to honduras – might as well jump right in, right?

[ok, fine…dad had already caught it in a glass, but still…it had been chilling in the living room when he walked in.]

probably more importantly, we happen to be here during the first coup de etat in central america since the cold war.  the president of honduras, zelaya, was ‘kidnapped’ or ‘exiled’ (depending on who you talk to) today and flown to costa rica.  the military is in power now and it sounds like the capital (where we’re supposed to be flying in a couple days) is in pretty rough shape.  we’re safe here at the moment – nothing even seems amiss, actually.  but we’re keeping our ear to the ground and being as safe as we can.  we’re just not certain all our plans will play out the way he had planned.  read one version  of the coup here.
