surprise! granola

making granola this morning.  granola’s never turned out so well for me before.  maybe because i hate following recipes and there are so many variables in granola.  and even if i ever do get it right, there’s a really good chance i didn’t measure what i put in and therefore won’t be able to recreate it anyway.

(yes, there are obvious solutions to the above “problem,” but for some reason i continue on this path.  maybe i’m addicted to surprise.)

this all brings to mind a poem paul reminded me of this morning that he wrote a couple years back, inspired by one of my favorite chesterton quotes.  according to this, maybe i’m on to something. (unless, of course, my “habit” happens to be refusing to develop habits):

habits and rabbits

all of our habits are
bad habits,
but all of our rabbits
aren’t bad.
except when our rabbits have
bad habits
then, their goodness, it wanes
just a tad.
cause when rabbits act badly
a little too tadly
their patterns turn into routine.
though when they act goodly
as oft as they shouldly
these patterns can turn just as mean.

The reasons you seem to not like making granola are the exact reasons why I love it! I love just throwing things in a bowl, not using a single measuring utensil and just hoping that it turns out ok. I feel like the more carefree I am about it (which usually means I add weird things like almond extract) the tastier it is.

    Personal observations:
-Molasses works better than honey, but with either, mixing it with warm water first makes it coat more evenly

-Coconut flakes seem to never be able to be tasted

-A packet of Quaker instant apples and cinnamon oatmeal adds so much awesomeness

-Apple pie spice = just as much awesomeness

-Baking it in a metal pie tin instead of a glass dish seems to suck the moisture out quicker

oh girl i LOVE it, it just never turns out as well as i hope :/ but i think the metal dish idea sounds like it might solve at lest one of my reoccuring problems. i’m using agave but i’ll def try mixing it w water – great idea. thanks for all the help, clare!
