mixtape

i have a tape player in my truck and a friend who sent me a pretty great mix tape awhile back.  and though i don’t drive that often in boulder, when i do it’s nice to have it as a soundtrack.  my favorite song lately has been one called my favorite chords by the weakerthans.  it’s an unintentional part of an ongoing conversation/theme i’ve had with several friends over the last few months.  something like pieces that fit and don’t fit.  something about how the people you allow close each have an effect on you.  enormous minuscule things like becoming the reason i want to open every deck of cards to see if there are small square holes cut in some of the cards.  and how photographs taken of people from the top-down now make me sad instead of nostalgic.  how people know the smallest things about you and interact with you in ways that change you.  i like that about people, but it’s also what sends my brain into a tailspin.  i have an alarm bell that eventually rings, “what’s the point?”  maybe i’m a closet pessimist.  or maybe it’s just a phase.  or maybe i’m just ready for spring.  i’m definitely ready for spring.

Hey I found the safest place to keep all our tenderness.
Keep all those bad ideas. Keep all our hope.
It’s here in the smallest bones, the feet and the inner-ear.
It’s such an enormous thing to walk and to listen.
