salt river

i spent the last week on the salt river waking to the moonset and sunrise, drinking boil-in-pot coffee, learning about the way water moves, building fires, sharing every moment of the day with 9 others…things that have a tendency to reset my perspective.  the first night as the first peels of smoke rolled off the fire you could look around the circle and see it: every one of us was back.  we all felt it at the same time.  we picked up where we left off in the grand canyon.  i think it startled each of us it came on so quickly.  like we’d all taken one look at the orange glow in the fire pan and inhaled that tamarisk and mesquite smoke and fallen into the same communal trance.  we were back on the river – pulled out of our individual lives to live one mutual life together for 5 days.  there’s really nothing else like it.
