fruit flies

the fruit flies seem to have taken over my kitchen. i guess that speaks to the amount of fresh produce we constantly have bringing color to the small room (our produce has officially found a new home in the refrigerator). but any way you slice the cake, fruit flies are just gross. any suggestions on how to rid ourselves of them would be appreciated. i’ve tried soap suds, a honey bottle with a funnel cap, and a jar filled with simple syrup and holes poked in the lid. seems they prefer to live on the cheesecloth covering my fermenting kombucha and apple cider vinegars. i guess i shouldn’t complain. the equinox has passed and fall is here. winter’s just around the corner. that’ll teach ’em…even if i never have the chance to.

jar with apple cider vinegar and a funnel sitting on top. They go down inside but, can’t figure out how to get back out. Can also drill a hole in a lid and use a drinking straw that is about 2 inches long. Same principle. Into the straw and not enough brain to find the way back out.

If you ever find anything that actually works, post it! We have the same problem. And I agree, I’ve tried it all and NOTHING works. Apparently my Iowa fruit flies are smarter than most…
