for no real particular reason i had a discouraging week last week when it came to friends. a few things happened and i came to the haulting conclusion that i don’t have any tight do-anything-for-each-other friends in town right now. some have moved away. some are just out of town. and some that i thought suited the category…well…it turned out they did not.

i guess it’s a realization we must come to from time to time. choosing friends wisely and then keeping in mind what kind of friend they’re going to be…regardless of what kind of friend you WANT them to be. i think i have high expectations of my friends.

and then comes the reversal.

the one where your truck breaks down at 2 in the morning and a friend gets out of bed and comes to pick you up on the side of the road. the same friend gives you a place to sleep that night and a ride 45 min home to boulder in the morning before they have to be at work (back in golden) themselves at 8am.

the one where your roommate comes in the next morning and hands you her carkeys and says, “you are NOT going to be stressed and carless on your birthday.”

the one when your neighbor comes across the street to help when he sees you’re having trouble getting your new serpentine belt on your truck.

the one where your friends INSIST on still having your meteorite-watching birthday party despite your disallusionment with your birthday.

the one where i remember that i do, indeed, have wonderful friends. and that i can’t let a couple bad moods get me down.

I’m so sorry you didn’t have the great birthday that you deserve! I wish you could afford to get another vehicle. I know it is frustrating. I love you.

aahhh, but mama, you missed the reversal! i had a FANTASTIC birthday – just an exhausted one. i got to tinker inside an engine compartment, get a massage, had a sweetiepie 3-year-old sing me happy birthday, had a bonfire and watched incredible shooting stars while sipping hot cocoa. brilliant.
